Girl Gang

Yesterday was World Book Day.  My Little Miss decided she wanted to be Dorothy.  Cue a re-watch of the film and a trawl of the internet for inspiration

Of which I found lots!

As much as I've always wanted to be Mombi, I simply can't resist Glinda's sparkling beauty and that dress!  The colours, the colours, it's all too dreamy, I can't take it gaaaaaaah!

So I thought I'd share some other random stuff that's been inspiring me lately...

Inspiration has also come my way by way of this pastel punkette

Int she grand?  I'm totally inspired for Spring now!

Finally, on a musical note, I have been pleasantly surprised by the new direction this girl has taken

Pink and red together - swoon

Traditionally, I'll admit I was not a fan,  more of a dismissive overlooker.  But, reading a bit about her charity work, other extra curricular activities and her general attitude towards sexism in music, empowering women and the importance of building self esteem in young girls, has made me see her in a different light.  The latest album has echoes of Hole, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, and Lush among others, so the music's not bad either!

She has a bit of a potty mouth and her material is too adult for my 5 year old daughter at the moment but, given a choice between Kate and the bumping, grinding, copious flesh exposing, domestic violence acquiescing "pop princess" Rihanna, I know who I'd rather my daughter choose as a role model

Riot grrl for 21st century teens?  The Courtney legacy Courtney didn't quite manage to leave?

  1. I've never listened to Kate Nash, but I think I will now. Sounds good.

  2. *mMmM* BRIGHT DESERTS!

Those remind me of my 1960s Betty Crocker Birthday party cook book I have.
Everything in it looks like magic!

  4. Hmmm, I had heard of Kate Nash, in the context that I was pretty sure I wouldn't like her.....seems she has potential after all!
Love LOVE that multi coloured braid!
Thought you would like those boots I wore yesterday. I coveted them for ages, but they were over $300 NZ retail, so I bided my time, and a couple of years later picked 'em up for $40 NZ on Trade Me! I really REALLY want them in black. I think they may have come in burgundy too.
Glinda was a little too prissy for me, I always figured the Wicked Witch would have had a lot more fun! XXX

  6. Such an inspiring post with all the things we love!!! Glinda, pastel hair, Helena..the Hole and Clare!!!! I really needed this pastel injection on a gray Saturday that seems to never starts and never ends. I'm glad that my daughters don't understand English and they listened to Bikini Kill's 'Rebel Girl' all day long!Kate Nash's new style seems so much better than it used to be, this song is funny and catchy, I'm glad Riot Grrrls are back!
    Love xxxxxx

  7. She seems to have her head screwwed on right, kate Nash, then, her work with schoolgirls is the kind of thing that would make Courtney proud, we need more awareness like that indeed instead of all the crappy female stereotypes endorsed in the media. any post with a picture of Hole and a pastel punkette makes me happy too x

  9. The Wizard of Oz is still such a beautiful film isn't it? I must admit I have made my kids sit and watch it while I played Dark Side of the Moon to see if the two do fit in around each other as they're meant to, it kind of worked. I've been seeing Kate Nash in the papers a lot lately but I haven't heard her new music yet so I will have to give her a listen, I always thought of her as a bit of a Lily Allen copycat before, which was probably very unfair of me. And Miss Simmonds is looking lovely, though it's gone into the depths of winter again here so it's back to woollies and boots, it's meant to be -17 next week, I hate it! xx

  10. Hurrah! I'm so proud to be included in a list with Courtney! She's looking lovely in a buttery dress. Go on.... I'll do high heeled sandals and socks if you do! I love that GIF of Glinda, I had to download it. I bet your daughter looked great, she's got a super cool mum after all.
Oooh your key necklace reminded me of those Clarks shoes with the key in the heel! Did you have a pair?

  11. See I quite liked Foundations (the song) cos it was easy to mumble along too - perhaps she can't actually sing? Am unconvinced but willing to be persuaded by her new direction. I had a 'Where's Wally' and a 'Captain Hook' for our WBD.

  12. Kate Nash always irritated me but I liked her Cribs boyfriend so thought she must have had something going for her as he was so cool. x

  13. When Kate Nash first came over to the States - I saw her perform in a very small venue. I was shocked to see that it was loaded with 5-10 year old girls and their parents. I haven't really paid attention to her music in quite sometime, but I'm intrigued to see what her new album sounds like since you've mentioned it.

I love all your inspirations Lucy. Glenda was always my favorite part of The Wizard of Oz and Clare and her vintage outfits is always looking fabulous :-)

  14. Enormously talented woman with potty-mouth? Yes please thank you very much. I know who I would want as a role model for my 10yo. She seems to be on the right track so far and she digs loads of old skool tunes, which of course makes mama very happy, but I'm sure all that will change in two years;). Our pastel-punkette is a goddess isn't she? Flippin' amazing:). Your pics are inspiring ... love the pink sox gif, I need to go to Witch Jail and I'm seriously in lust with HBC's Edwardian outfit. Thank you for the pick-me-up Lucy:) xoxox

  16. Just goes to show pink and pastel-y doesn't have to be insipid or wishy-washy - those are not words which apply to our Miss S, or those crazy puddings, or Hole! Loving that multicoloured plait too. Not a particular fan of Kate Nash's music but I am always happy to see women who write their own stuff and encourage others to do so, without falling into the traditional Pop Princess mould. xxxx

  20. I'm loving your punky pastel inspiration! Those cakes! That fairy dress! I used to be such a fan of Hole in the 90s, tried to dress just like Courtney, sadly very few of my petticoat dresses have survived that era due to the amount of partying I did in those days, they started out fashionably ripped and mostly ended up totally wrecked!

  22. Love everything here- especially Glinda. Since I first saw Wizard of Oz, I've been Dorothy every few Halloween's - but Glinda is someone I have yet to master. This just inspired me to dress up as her for next Halloween ;)
